Freedom in Self-Expression
Brianna’s experience with the niqab became a transformative journey from feeling insecure and enslaved to societal beauty standards to a place of self-acceptance and comfort in her own skin. Her embrace of Islam allowed her to disregard societal expectations and redefine her understanding of freedom—a sentiment she found by living authentically according to her beliefs.
“I definitely feel empowered wearing the niqab. I feel like a lot of women are sort of mentally enslaved to the beauty standard and I was one of them. For the longest time I felt like I couldn’t go out without makeup. I was always thinking about getting lip fillers or doing something to change my body and it made me very insecure. Being a Muslim helped me stop caring what people thought about me in general and made me a lot more comfortable in my own skin.”
